Needles
When it comes to needles, there are several options from which to choose. Because the needle plays an important part in creating perfect stitches, take time to consider the needle type and size before beginning each machine embroidery project.
The shank of the needle fits into the embroidery sewing machines have a flat back so the needle cannot be inserted incorrectly.
The groove that runs vertically down the front of the needle guides the thread as it travels into the fabric. It is important that the thread is small enough to lie flat in the groove. Otherwise, if the thread is too large for the groove, the result will be imperfect stitching.
Thread passes through eye of the needle many times during the process of forming stitches. Some specialty needles have larger eyes and/or eyes that are not quite round for use with decorative threads. This helps protect the threads from abrasion.
Needles range from size 60-120. The point of the needle is one of the most important aspects of choosing a needle for a embroidery or sewing project. When in doubt, start with a Universal needle. If the stitches are less than perfect, experiment with other point types.
Sharps-standard needle made with a sharp point to penetrate threads of woven fabrics. Generally not a good idea for stitching on knits, as the sharp point will cut through the yarns, creating holes and/or runs.
Ballpoint-has a rounded point to slide between the yarns of knit fabric.
Universal-slightly rounded, works well for many sewing situations.
Embroidery-helps prevent shredding of embroidery rayon and metallic threadas. The point is slightly rounded, with a large eye.
Metafil-especially for metallic threads, the eye is large, with a friction reducing finish.
Wedge Point-has a special wedge point for piercing leather. Not good for imitation leather fabric.
